under-fire manager Russelll Wilcox says calling his York City players in for a meeting on Sunday morning was an attempt to “shake things up a bit”.

The Minstermen slumped to fourth in the table bottom courtesy of a 3-1 defeat at Barnet that the club’s manager labelled as “unacceptable”.

Wilcox, who again faced calls for his dismissal from a disillusioned section of York’s supporters, needs to return to winning ways tonight when second bottom Dagenham & Redbridge head to Bootham Crescent.

He said: “We got the lads in on Sunday and, to be fair to them, their attitude has been first class. They are a good group.

“We just wanted to shake things up a bit. We don’t usually bring them in on a Sunday, and certainly not after a long trip.

“What I want to stress is this was not a crisis meeting. The season is only 12 or 13 games old but we do want a reaction to the Barnet performance.

“That wasn’t good enough but before that we had gone three games unbeaten. We need to start getting more wins, starting with Dagenham at home.”

Russell Penn will miss tonight’s match with an ankle injury.
