Yorkshire team of the week: Billing one to watch after selection posers

After last weekend’s famine, cometh the feast - with no less than six Yorkshire teams claiming victories, up from a miserly two on the first weekend of February.

A week on, Hull City, Sheffield Wednesday, Huddersfield Town, Bradford City, Sheffield United and York City provided fans with an early Valentine’s Day present.

The upshot is that there were plenty of contenders for this week’s Yorkshire Post Team of the Weekend.

Here’s our line-up:

1: Scott Flinders (York City).

The Minstermen custodian has endured an at times difficult campaign thus far but Flinders was afforded a rewarding Saturday as York recorded back-to-back home wins for the first time since April. Made a key first-half save to deny Alan Smith and proved solid on the day amid a fair bit of pressure.

2: Frazer Richardson (Rotherham United).

It has been a tough old season for the veteran but he put in a diligent and resolute shift to help Neil Warnock start off his Millers’ reign with a clean sheet. He will need a few more of those if Rotherham are to survive.

3: James Meredith (Bradford City).

Patchy is probably the best word to describe this season for the Aussie but he was back to his barnstorming best at Peterborough as City ran riot in a 4-0 win, helping to provide assists for two goals.

4: Neill Collins (Sheffield United).

Went close to an early opener for the visitors at the Keepmoat and was in resolute form throughout with below-par Doncaster hardly afforded a sniff of goal.

5: Mark Hudson (Huddersfield Town).

His organisational skills came to the fore in a major way in Nottingham as he produced a display full of authority as Town shored it up and kept the back door shut.

6: Tom Huddlestone (Hull City).

While form is temporary, class is permanent with Huddlestone offering a rewind to better times with an accomplished display at Ewood Park. On a rare chance to shine back in the engine room, Huddlestone showed poise and control when linking back up with former Spurs team-mate Jake Livermore. Could be a massive player for Hull in the run-in.

7: Philip Billing (Huddersfield Town).

The big Dane is highly-regarded by those in the know at Town’s Canalside training ground and saw his name in lights with an absolute screamer from distance at the City Ground. Strong and composed for such a powerhouse unit - we may be hearing a little bit more about the young midfielder before the season is over.

8: Barry Bannan (Sheffield Wednesday).

A delight in full flow this season and was again at his probing and impish best against the Bees. Very much Wednesday’s talisman in the middle of the park and looked a class apart again as the Owls turned on the style yet again at Hillsborough. Pipped Jose Baxter, impressive in the Blades’ win at Doncaster, for his place in this week’s XI.

9: James Hanson (Bradford City).

Unplayable in the words of Phil Parkinson and was back to his best at London Road. Terrorised Posh in the air and fully justified Parkinson’s decision to partner him with Wes Thomas when it had been a pre-match toss-up whether to opt for him or Jamie Proctor. Hanson’s two goals took his seasonal tally to nine.

10: Mo Diame (Hull City).

Scored and set up a goal for Abel Hernandez and proved too hot to handle for the Blackburn rearguard - with him and his strike partner having scored 21 league goals between them this term. Possesses physicality and quality and is clearly intent on returning to the top flight at the first time of asking with the Tigers.

11: Kenny McEvoy (York City).

Set up Bradley Fewster’s killer second goal and proved a real threat on the day with his pace and energy. More please, will be the collective cry from Minstermen supporters. Just gets the nod ahead of Kyel Reid.

Manager: David Wagner.

An exceedingly close call between the German and Phil Parkinson. But Wagner gets the vote after masterminding a much-needed win for Town, who were starting to wobble a bit. The visitors provided balm for their recent defensive ills as they ended Nottingham Forest’s 13-match unbeaten run in outstanding fashion.
