Yorkshire's team of the weekend

NOT for the first time in recent weeks, rejuvenated Rotherham United secured the hegemony in our Yorkshire Team of the Weekend, with three Millers players earning a place in our XI, while several other candidates were also knocking on the door.

Here’s our latest line-up - feel free to disagree - with the absence of any Sheffield Wednesday players being a particular rarity given their feats this term.

1: Dimi Konstantopoulos (Middlesbrough).

Another clean sheet for the Greek custodian, who seems to be getting better with age, like a fine wine. Showed his agility to make a fine save to deny Preston’s Marnick Vermijl in the second half of another tense Riverside occasion on Saturday. Got to be a candidate for the Championship’s PFA divisional side.

2: Stephen Darby (Bradford City).

Another solid, determined and unflustered showing from Bradford’s captain, who is wonderfully consistent. Leads by example and one of the first names on the teamsheet. Honest and thoroughly committed.

3: Alex Baptiste (Sheffield United).

Played his part in the Blades shutting out Gillingham and after his wretched luck at the start of the season with injury, the loanee is starting to make up for lost time.

4: Liam Cooper (Leeds United).

Stood tall when ahead of the game, many cynics were expecting Burnley’s much-vaunted attack of Andre Gray and Sam Vokes to go through Leeds’s much-maligned defence like a knife through butter. Imposed himself on proceedings and won his battles.

5: Kirk Broadfoot (Rotherham United).

Enjoying himself immensely these days with the Millers, a far cry from the start of the season when he was suspended and sat in the stands. Dominant and strong at the back, with his renaissance earning him a first goal for the Millers in Saturday’s 4-0 win at MK Dons - and how he celebrated. Few would have begrudged him that.

6: Richie Smallwood (Rotherham United).

A 100 per center and a real unsung hero and another who was afforded a rare piece of the limelight with a well-taken looping volley in front of around 3,000 ecstatic Millers punters in Buckinghamshire. Gets his foot in, works like a trojan and is the proverbial team man. Just the sort of player Neil Warnock likes and looks after.

7: Rajiv Van La Parra (Huddersfield Town).

After a plain awful performance in a Yorkshire derby three weeks earlier at Leeds United, the loanee winger showed what he was truly about with a fine display on the wing and produced pace, trickery and intent in equal measure to trouble Hull’s rearguard.

David Wagner said that the real Van La Parra stepped forward and it was a welcome sight.

8: Josh Cullen (Bradford City).

Stood out on the pockmarked Valley Parade surface with a composed and industrious performance - small wonder why he is so highly rated in the corridors of power at parent club West Ham and at his current loan destination of Valley Parade. Looks to have an extremely bright future ahead of him.

9: Matt Derbyshire (Rotherham United).

Another who is having a proverbial party under Neil Warnock. Volte-face from the previous weekend when he sent off against Leeds - the red card was later rescinded - with Derbyshire scoring his fourth goal since the arrival of saviour Warnock and eighth of the season at MK Dons.

His strike represented an early 30th birthday present - he reaches that milestone on Thursday.

10: Tom Huddlestone (Hull City).

Stood out in the derby cauldron with a classy display, almost crowned by a goal after seeing a sweet strike hit the woodwork in Hull’s 2-2 draw at Huddersfield. City will need him in the games and weeks ahead.

11: Adam Hammill (Barnsley).

Scored another well-executed goal, although it was not quite up to the standard of his wondrous effort at Wembley. Very much Barnsley’s creative force and orchestrator - and after the weekend loss to Chesterfield, how the Reds will need him to be on top form again to hopefully instigate victory over Oldham tomorrow night in a game the hosts must win to keep their top-six bid alive.

Manager: Neil Warnock (Rotherham United).

Come on, who else could it have been? More marvellous, marvellous stuff from the veteran, with the Millers’ relegation fires now virtually extinguished. Bravo.
