YP Power Rankings: Who's top of the tree in Yorkshire?

IT is all change at both ends of the table in the penultimate Yorkshire Post Power Rankings of the season following plenty of chopping and changing over the weekend - with a new name at the summit.

.

Here are the latest rankings.

1: Bradford City WWDLWW (+2)

New leaders after the Millers’ epic stint at No 1. City negotiated a tough looking away assignment on paper at Southend and came away from the seaside with a 1-0 win to book their play-off berth a game early. Only Wigan are ahead of Bradford in the League One form table over the past 10 matches. Impressive.

2: Rotherham United DWDDDL (-1)

The Millers, in their final home game of the season, suffered a rare Spring sensation, defeat with Neil Wanrock suffering his first New York Stadium reverse as Rotherham boss in a 1-0 Roses loss to Blackburn. Considerable perspective is afforded by the fact that it was the Millers’ first defeat in 12 matches, with safety clinched a few weeks before, in truth.

3: Barnsley LWDWDD (-1)

A cruel leveller in the eighth minute of stoppage-time from Colchester ensured Barnsley must sweat it out on the final day at Wigan on Sunday, with Scunthorpe breathing down the Reds’ necks and Gillingham not too far behind. But Barnsley’s fates are in their own hands and it has been a truly remarkable post-Christmas story at Oakwell, regardless of their weekend slip-up. In credit.

4: Sheffield Wednesday WLDDDW (+4)

After several weeks, the Owls finally nailed down their top-six place with a powerhouse victory over Cardiff City, their only remaining rival for sixth spot. In the process, Carlos Carvalhal’s side laid down a marker for the play-offs with a vibrant performance with the win allowing them to rest players, if needs be, in Saturday’s final regular game of the season at Molineux.

5: Middlesbrough WWWDDD (=)

A dramatic Friday night at Birmingham saw Boro held in a 2-2 draw, on a night when a horrendous decision from Yorkshire-based linesman Tom Nield could well have denied them three massive points when he incorrectly ruled out a potentially decisive third goal from Daniel Ayala. A crumb of solace arrived on Monday when Brighton were held 1-1 by Derby, meaning Boro can be promoted with a draw in Saturday’s monumental cup final with Brighton at the Riverside. But going for the win remains the Teessiders’ aim.

6: Leeds United LWWWDL (-2)

In typical Leeds United fashion, a half-decent run came to a shuddering halt with relegated Charlton triumphing 2-1, to continue the Whites’ wretched recent form in their final home games of the season at Elland Road. It ended Leeds’s hopes of a highest points return since 2010-11 in what could well turn out to be Steve Evans’s final home game in charge of the club.

7: Guiseley DLWLLW (+2)

For the umpteenth time in recent seasons, Guiseley were pitted into a final-day humdinger and akin to last year, they came out smiling after securing one of the biggest wins in the club’s history, beating Torquay 4-3 in a Nethermoor thriller - with Yorkshire rivals FC Halifax’s draw with Macclesfield saving their skins. Party time at Nethermoor. Mission accomplished.

8: Hull City DWWDWL (-2)

The Tigers slumped to an embarrassing defeat to seasonal easybeats Bolton, who claimed just their fifth win of a disastrous season - their first victory in 15 matches. It may have been a much-changed Hull side, but it was still a lamentable result and performance that cannot be glossed over. This being a side who are in the play-offs and seeking momentum ... supposedly.

9: Huddersfield Town LDWDDL (-2)

A 4-0 defeat at Bristol City which no-one saw coming represented arguably the low point of David Wagner’s tenure - although aside from a blow to pride, the result did not matter in the statistical scheme of things. But a deflating result, nevertheless.

10: Sheffield United WDWWDL (=)

A limp end to a flat season saw the Blades lose out 3-1 at Coventry, with one of the rare shining lights in a below-par campaign being Billy Shar, who at least afforded himself his 21st goal of 2015-16. A forgettable year for Nigel Adkins and the Blades, who can do Barnsley a huge favour by beating Scunthorpe on Sunday.

11: FC Halifax Town LLLDWD (-2)

A horrible denouement for the Shaymen, who came into the weekend game at home to Macclesfield with safety in their hands and at the interval, when they led the Silkmen 1-0. But a second-half leveller from Danny Rowe - whose brother Tommy was playing for Doncaster at Crewe - combined with victories for Guiseley and Boreham Wood means that the FA Trophy finalists dropped down to the Conference North in a bitter Saturday evening.

12: York City DDLWLL (+1)

Only up one by virtue of Doncaster’s defeat and the fact that the Minstermen can now start planning for Conference life in earnest again and put moves into operation after a desperate campaign was rounded off with a 4-1 loss to high-flying Bristol Rovers. If ever a club wanted the season to end, it was York.

13: Doncaster Rovers DLWDWL (-2)

On an afternoon when victory would have ultimately kept their Great Escape quest alive - given relegation rivals Fleetwood’s Bank Holiday Monday loss at Walsall and Shrewsbury’s dramatic 4-3 reverse to Peterborough - Rovers capitulated in sorry fashion after taking the lead at relegated Crewe, who went into the game on the back of a 15-match winless streak before securing a rare three-point haul. The 3-1 loss effectively relegated Rovers, due to Fleetwood’s vastly-superior goal difference. A definite missed chance.
