Zaha may take wing against Canaries for Reds

England Under-21 regular Wilfried Zaha could start for champions Manchester United tonight with manager David Moyes revealing the winger is in contention to play against Norwich in the Capital One Cup fourth-round tie at Old Trafford.

Zaha, who has yet to feature in the Premier League for United, has found competition for places in the wide areas tough, but Moyes could give him a run-out against Chris Hughton’s side.

The signing from Crystal Palace has been linked with a possible loan switch away from United in January.

“I just don’t think we have had the right opportunity to get him on as much as would have liked,” Moyes said.

“We don’t want to put him in too quickly. We want to make it the right time.

“I’ve said I would look at it in January as I wanted to have him here for six months to see how we work.

“I told him we would try to get him minutes, but the competition in the wide areas we have with Nani, Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young, Adnan Januzaj and even Shinji Kagawa playing off the side means we are as strong there as anywhere.

“It’s not that Wilf has done anything wrong, it’s just that we have big competition and we have to try to make sure he gets some playing time.

“Unfortunately, we haven’t done that with Wilf and, if it’s still the case in January, we would look at it. But he is very much in my plans and in my thoughts all the time.”

Striker Javier Hernandez and defender Alexander Buttner could also come into contention with Moyes set to make late checks on injuries, to unspecified players, suffered in the 3-2 home win over Stoke on Saturday.

Germany youth international Serge Gnabry, who has signed a new long-term contract with Arsenal, is likely to be involved in tonight’s Capital One Cup fourth-round tie with Chelsea, if he can shake off an ankle injury.

Isaac Hayden and Ryo Miyaichi are also set to feature, but midfielder Mathieu Flamini (groin) and Mikel Arteta (suspended) are out.

Manager Arsene Wenger is uncertain how long Arsenal must do without Flamini.

He said: “He has a scan (yesterday) and then we will get the results as to how long he will be out.

“It doesn’t look like a bad muscle injury, but honestly it’s too early to give you a precise answer. It’s a groin injury.”

The fixture, coming with just a day’s rest after Chelsea beat Manchester City 2-1, means Blues manager Jose Mourinho will make wholesale changes.

Match-winner Fernando Torres is likely to be rested, as is Chelsea’s other scorer on Sunday, Andre Schurrle, depriving the German of a possible on-field reunion with his compatriots Mesut Ozil and Per Mertesacker.
