Former Tiger Griffin impresses Edwards

LEEDS Carnegie head coach Diccon Edwards has hailed the early-season impact of dual code centre Josh Griffin.

Edwards, whose side visit Plymouth Albion this afternoon, has been buoyed by the debut performance of the ex-Castleford Tigers player, who has passed a fitness test to feature at Brickfields (3pm).

Griffin and fellow league convert Jamel Chisholm crossed for tries in the 32-19 bonus-point Championship win over Jersey, a performance Edwards was pretty happy with.

He said: “It wasn’t a bad first touch for Josh to score. He showed everything we thought he would, really.

“He ran strongly and was a challenge for the Jersey defence and he’s fitted in seamlessly really.

“But what’s encouraging, for both him and the team, is that there’s so much more to come.

“I went through his game on Monday and he was asking lots of questions and he’s getting clarity and understanding in what we are trying to do by the week.”

Key forward Richard Beck has passed a fitness test and will also play, but full-back Stevie McColl is out with a heel injury.

Rotherham Titans visit Nottingham – who have won two out of two this term – tomorrow (3pm) with scrum-half Joel Gill, impressive from the bench last weekend, expected to start.

Garry Law is set for his first start of the campaign, most likely at centre, with Mike Whitehead donning the full-back jersey. Forward Alex Rieder is in the fray.

Coach Andre Bester said: “Our squad is big enough to cope with rotating. Players need a strong bench and it proved its worth against Bedford. Sunday is an important game for us. If our game plan is right, I am optimistic we can get something.”

Joe Donkin returns to the starting line-up for Wharfedale, who visit Blackheath in National One.

England Sevens star Aaron Myers will be on the bench which features just one backs replacement, the versatile Will Bell.

Stephen Myler kicked five penalties as Northampton made it three wins out of three in the
Aviva Premiership with a 18-14 win at Bath.

But their second away win of the campaign was achieved at the cost of a nasty looking ankle injury to England’s Ben Foden in the second half.

His replacement, Tom May, wrapped things up with a drop goal four minutes from time.

The only try of the game came after just 70 seconds through Nick Abendanon.
