Forward boost for injury-hit Steelers

SHEFFIELD Steelers have plugged the sizeable gap left by injured top goalscorer Maxime Lacroix by bringing in Nate DiCasmirro.

The 35-year-old Canadian-born forward – who holds dual US/Italian citizenship – will be familiar to the Steelers’ GB players having faced them at the World Championships earlier this year in Budapest where he registered a goal and an assist in Italy’s 5-1 win over Tony Hand’s team.

Steelers’ coach Doug Christiansen, working as Hand’s assistant during that tournament before succeeding him as head coach in the summer, obviously saw enough of DiCasmirro to try to lure him to South Yorkshire.

With more than 400 AHL games to his name, DiCasmirro is due to arrive at the Motorpoint Arena today and will go straight into tomorrow’s Challenge Cup game at home to Coventry Blaze.

“Nate is an impact player who we have tried to sign for a long time,” said Steelers’ assistant coach Marc LeFebvre.

“We believe he will be an excellent addition to our side.”

Lacroix scored seven goals and two assists in six starts for the Steelers before having to undergo surgery on a broken ankle.

Christiansen does not expect him to be ready to return until the new year and also has several of his defencemen on the treatment table ahead of tomorrow’s visit from Blaze.
