French test facing Wootton Bassett

LONGCHAMP remains the most likely port of call for Wootton Bassett after Yorkshire racing's latest equine standardbearer maintained his unbeaten record at Doncaster.

The youngster made it four wins from four starts in the Weatherbys Insurance 300,000 Stakes, and trainer Richard Fahey is eyeing a step up to Pattern-race company.

The Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere is his preferred option on October 3, although Newbury's Horris Hill Stakes is a possible alternative.

"He's in great order and has taken the race well.," said Malton-based Fahey. "I am swaying towards the French race for him next as I don't really want to come back to six furlongs at this stage, as it looks as though he stays well.

"It looks as though he'd just have one more run this year and he should strengthen up over the winter."

Wootton Bassett, named in honour of the Wiltshire town's solidarity with the Armed Forces and how it has saluted British troops killed in Afghanistan, is one of the ante-post favourites for the 200 Guineas.

Stable jockey Paul Hanagan – back in action today after suspension – believes the horse can win a first Group One race for the stable.
