The home side, looking to bounce back after losing their unbeaten league run at Cardiff on Sunday, soon established a grip on proceedings at Ice Sheffield when scoring two goals in the space of 24 seconds, the first coming from the stick of Fretter at 5.43 before defenceman Rod Sarich doubled the advantage.

The Capitals improved after the first period and matched their hosts in terms of goals, all four scored coming in the last six minutes of the second period with Tyler Mosienko and Mike Forney’s strikes being cancelled out by Jade Portwood and Rene Jarolin.

The result was never in doubt with the Steelers out-shooting their opponents 55-21, the impressive Fretter completing his hat-trick in the third period, the final goal coming on the powerplay in the 58th minute.

“I think we all know after the first month or so of the year that Colton Fretter is a very good hockey player” said a delighted Adams afterwards.

“He is very composed, very skillful and very smart. His line with Mike Forney and Mathieu Roy combines well and we have seen success from it. I hope that continues.”

Fretter wasn’t the only one to come in for praise from the Steelers’ head coach, who was clearly impressed with the overall team performance.

“I was really happy with the guys mental approach to the game,” said Adams.

“The willingness to compete in the first period was key to getting that first goal. The guys performed really well.”
