Gerrans places third as Freire wins again
CYCLING: Team Sky's Simon Gerrans was third on the third stage of the Ruta del Sol yesterday as Oscar Freire won the bunch sprint for his second successive win.
Freire, winner of Monday’s second stage, crossed the line first on the 162.5-km stage from Marbella to Benahavis with Lampre’s Grega Bole second, while stage one victor Sergio Pardilla Bellon (Carmiooro NGC) retained his overall lead.
Gerrans, a stage winner in last year’s Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a Espana, was the latest Team Sky rider to claim a podium finish, with team-mates Stephen Cummings finishing in the bunch in 23rd place and Bradley Wiggins 59th, 69 seconds behind.
