Alison Nicholas Fund Day at Ripon City proves great success for Yorkshire captain Jean Waring

FORTY teams took part in Alison Nicholas Day, hosted by Yorkshire ladies’ captain Jean Waring at Ripon City to raise funds for the Alison Nicholas Fund.

The raffle alone made over £800 for a fund which helps junior players meet the costs of equipment, coaching and national competition entry fees.

Yorkshire has awarded two bursaries this year to girls in further education.

Waring said: “I am very grateful to everyone who helped me by sponsoring prizes and clubs who donated rounds of golf.

“Ripon City GC have also been very supportive and are to be congratulated in providing an excellent course for this event.

“It was a great day despite all the hard work to get ready for it - and all the paperwork to do after it.”

A full field saw the first team off at 8.30am and the last at 3pm.

Team Wood from Ripon City won with 83 Stableford points, two ahead of Team Hartley with Team Holmes third on 77 and Team Waights fourth on 75.

Former Yorkshire county amateur Nicholas win both the British and US Opens during her illustrious professional career and played six times for Europe in the Solheim Cup.

The Alison Nicholas Fund was started in 1991 with a generous gift from Nicholas herself and is now entirely dependent upon donations from golf clubs’ ladies sections, societies and private individuals.
