Brown takes revenge to ride high in Carris Trophy at Fulford

Brown produced an eagle at the 506-yard par-5 ninth, where a day before he had taken a triple bogey eight, to add a 68 to Tuesday’s 73 for a three-under-par aggregate.

He is tied for fifth with four players sharing top spot in what is the English Under-18 boys’ open championship, ahead of two further rounds today and tomorrow.

Rotherham’s Ben Schmidt, who came so close to claiming the McGregor Trophy last week before a closing birdie barrage from eventual winner Conor Gough, of Stoke Park, climbed 66 places at Fulford by following a 76 with a five-under-par 67.

The round was flawless with the Yorkshire Boys’ champion accumulating five birdies – two on the front nine and three on the back – with no bogeys all day.

Fulford’s George Robson, a late entrant when he was called off the reserve list, was sixth over night having begun with a one-under-par 71, but slipped back to equal 35th after a 76.

He eagled the 534-yard par-5 11th as he had on day one. However, his scorecard was scarred two holes later by a quadruple bogey eight at the 486-yard par-4 13th.

Two other Yorkshire players made the cut, both on four over in a tie for 47th.

Woodsome Hall’s George Heath has had rounds of 75 73 – the latter including four birdies – scores duplicated by Rotherham’s Charlie Daughtrey, who had one birdie fewer yesterday.

Among those who missed the cut were Middlesbrough’s Michael Hay (79 74), who finished with a flourish by eagling the 480-yard par-5 last, Skipton’s Max Berrisford (76 75) and Hornsea’s Jack Maxey.

Wakefield’s Dan Bradbury tumbled down the leaderboard to 19th spot having shared the overnight lead in the Walton Heath Trophy.

Bradbury, who shot 67 on day one, added a 76 that included just six pars, as well as four birdies and eight bogeys.

Hallowes’ Sam Bairstow is inside the top-25 after scores of 74 71, his second round including an eagle at the 564-yard 14th.

Ben Hutchinson (Howley Hall) is alongside him with the same scores in reverse, he too eagling the 14th.Huddersfield’s Josh Morton carded a second consecutive 74 while David Houlding, of Moortown, endured a miserable couple of days with scores of 77 83. Chartham Park’s Tom Thurloway leads on seven-under-par 137 (69 68).

Abbeydale won a keenly-contested Yorkshire Team Championship at Rotherham, getting the better of Fulford by just one shot. They in turn took second place by the same slender margin from Middlesbrough.

Tim Brind (70 71), Josh Wright (70 72) and Jack Leversidge (69 72) saw Abbeydale home. Fulford’s team members were Damon Coulson (68 76), Charlie Thornton (67 70) and James Cass (73 71).
