Centurions honoured by Sheffield Union of Golf Clubs

SHEFFIELD Union of Golf Clubs made presentations to five players who have each represented the union more than 100 times at the union's annual dinner and prize winners’ presentation.

More than 300 people from across the region gathered at the Sheffield Holiday Inn Royal Victoria for the occasion as Richard Jones (Wath), Shaun Tarplett (Hillsborough), Tony Gelsthorpe (Tinsley/Renishaw), Iain Mackenzie (Hillsborough/Hallamshire) and Martin Haddock (Wheatley) were presented with specially-commissioned caps to mark their achievements.

Other highlights included presentations to the Doncaster junior team that won the SUGC junior team championship, the Yorkshire inter district team championship and the England junior team club championship.

Josh Berry, also of Doncaster, won the best British Under-10 adidas Wee Wonders event on the Strathtyrum course at St Andrews.

Hallamshire's Barclay Brown was another junior to excel, representing his club and country, as well as being, at the age of 14, the youngest winner of the Sheffield Plate. He also won the Junior Champion of Champions.

Nick Poppleton, of Wath, retained his crown as Golfer of the Year.

Phoenix also had a great year, defending their first Division title in style.

The union also now boasts the English amateur Champion in Joe Dean while former members, now professionals, Danny Willett and Matt Fitzpatrick, have both won on the European Tour this season.

The union’s senior team won both the Yorkshire Inter District team championship and the league.

The evening, sponsored by iGolfStudio, was led by union president Daran Johnson.

Hessle have moved joint top of the East Riding Alliance following the fifth event, which they hosted.

They share the lead in the championship table with Hornsea on 661 following a 63 from assistant Professional Dave Woodhead and partner Brian Drake.

They also had a third place thanks to a 66 by the club's touring professional Paul Lockwood and partner Mally Redmore.

The alliance winners were Hornsea's EuroPro Tour player Steve Uzzell and Natham Wright.

Scarborough North Cliff were three in front of Hornsea at the start of the day, but now trail by nine on 670 after rounds of 72 and 73 at Hessle.

Brian Drake won Division 1 of Hessle's Christmas Individual Stableford with 43 points, three ahead of Nick Blenkin.

Division 2 winner Paul Simpson totalled 44 points, also winning by three, from Jack Kennedy.

The Pro's Stableford saw Malcolm Sutton place first on 41 points, two in front of Richard Connell.

Chris Railton and Rick Williams just edged Joe Hancock and Tony Johnson to win the Pro's Better Ball event, shooting 65.

Week three of Rotherham's Race to Spring saw two players card 41 points, Matt King taking victory from Dan Savage on countback. Keith Rixham was third on 38 points.

Lewis Jarvis stormed to victory in the Pro's Stableford as the only competitor to better his handicap. Second place went to Matt Woolley on 36 points, beating Ben Schmidt on countback.

The Mixed competition saw Ron Adams, Chris Green, Ida Nicolson and Stuart Kendal led the way with 51 points, two ahead of Terry Tate, Rita Tate, Kevin Whitehead and Sarah Bailey in second.

At Rotherham juniors' presentation night, Ben Schmidt was awarded the Golfer of the Year accolade.
