WAKEFIELD’S Julie Wheeldon went down by just one hole in the quarter-finals to end her hopes of winning the English Senior Women’s Amateur Championship on Yorkshire soil, at Hallamshire

But the White Rose still has hopes of a title success in the second flight, for over-60s, with Huddersfield’s Pat Wrightson having beaten Bingley St Ives’ Anne Flintoff 7&6 in the semi-finals.

Wakefield's Julie Wheeldon reached the last eight of the English Senior Women's Amateur Championship at Hallamshire.

Former England Seniors captain Wrightson will play Notts Ladies’ Carol Wild in today’s final hoping to claim the Ann Howard Trophy.

Wheeldon faced a formidable opponent in her semi-final in Cath Rawthore, twice an English Seniors champion and once the British title holder, and only succumbed on the final green.

Richmond’s Karen Jobling, who had qualified first from the 36-hole stroke play stage, went down in the first round of the top flight of the match play, as did Bingley St Ives’ Mary Moore and Doncaster’s Sarah Newton.

Flintoff reached the over-60s last four by beating Judy Butler (Malton & Norton) 2&1 and then Hazel Fisher – playing at her home club of Hallamshire – by one hole.

Wrightson won 4&3 against Susan Westall (Copt Heath) and 3&2 versus Cathy Armstrong (Ellesborough) before proving too strong for Flintoff.

Rawthore is the only semi-finalist in the top flight to have claimed a top trophy although Aileen Greenfield (Pyecombe) has come tantalisingly close, having been runner-up three times in English championships.

Completing the last-four line-up are Sue Spencer (Whittington Heath) and Janette McWhirter (Appleby).

Greenfield will meet Spencer while Rawthore faces McWhirter.
