Huddersfield's in-form Heath claims top-10 place in English women's open amateur championship

Her top-10 placing came courtesy of a superb final round of three-under-par 70 that could have been even better.

The England Under-16 international – who only five days ago reached the semi-finals of the girls’ British Open amateur championship at Ardglass – was five under through 13 holes, but dropped two shots in her last four holes, her only bogeys of the round.

Heath, who this season has defended her Pleasington Putter title as well as triumphing in the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters and the English Schools Golf Association girls’ championship, produced scores of 73 76 78 70.

Lindrick’s Nicola Slater ensured Yorkshire had two players finish inside the top 13.

The English women’s open match play champion scored 76 76 74 75.

Runaway winner at Coventry was Heath’s semi-final conqueror last Saturday, Austria’s Isabella Holpfer, who completed a remarkable wire-to-wire victory when she finished 11 shots clear of the field.

The 17-year-old was 13 under par and dominated after shooting a seven-under-par 66 in round one to create a gap of six shots on the field.

After a level-par second round she was five under for round three to create a 10-shot gulf and eased to victory with a one-under-par 72.

Holpfer, who lost in the British final in Northern Ireland to fellow Austrian Emma Spitz, said: “This is pretty good. This is my last tournament of the season and I’ve had a pretty good season, so it’s nice to finish off with a win.”

This is one of her biggest wins and she adds it to the Irish women’s open, which she won as a 14-year-old, and the Slovenian ladies crown, claimed earlier this season.

The runner-up on two under was Holland’s Pasqualle Coffa, followed by Ireland’s Jessica Ross, who took third place on level.
