McDowell leads the way but Parry exits

GOLF: Graeme McDowell will take a one-shot lead into the third round of the Nedbank Golf Challenge today, with Yorkshire’s Simon Dyson well-placed three shots back in joint-third.

McDowell overcame a double-bogey seven on the 14th to card a five-under-par 67 at the Gary Player Country Club.

At seven under, the former US Open champion tops a crowded leaderboard with defending champion Lee Westwood, world No 4 Martin Kaymer, Swede Robert Karlsson and American Jason Dufner all one shot behind.

Dyson is two shots further back alongside Korea’s Kyung-Tae Kim, both men carding two rounds of 70.

World No 1 Luke Donald is five shots off the pace after a second day score of 72.

“That’s exactly what I wanted,” said McDowell. “It’s a pretty bunched leaderboard, which says a lot about how tough the course is when you start leaving the beaten track. I’m very happy to finish with a couple of birdies.”

It was a bad day for Harrogate’s John Parry after he missed the cut in the Hong Kong Open, an outcome that sees him lose his full playing rights for the European Tour next season.

Parry hit a second round of 72 but it was not enough to prevent his exit as he missed the halfway trapdoor by by six shots. The setback comes just 15 months after he won a tournament in his rookie year.

US Open champion Rory McIlroy shares the lead with Alvaro Quiros on seven under.
