The 26-year-old – who won qualifying school last December to return to the European Tour – was one of 12 players to book a place at Merion, Pennsylvania, from June 13-16.

Parry opened with a 66 in the morning and added a 75 which put him in a six-man play-off for five places with European Ryder Cup captain Jose Maria Olazabal, Argentine Estanislao Goya, Scotland’s Chris Doak, Swede Rikard Karlberg and fellow Englishman David Howell.

At the first play-off hole, Parry, Olazabal and Howell all made birdie to progress.

Doak, Goya and Karlberg all made pars on the subsequent two additional holes before Karlberg struck a tree with his tee shot on the fourth and could only make bogey, meaning the Swede was the man to miss out.

Malton’s Simon Dyson and Richard Finch, of Hull, also failed to qualify.

Dyson shot rounds of 72 and 70 to miss out on the play-off by one shot. Finch carded disparate rounds of 78 and 68.

Yorkshire made it two wins out of two in the Northern Counties League with a 13-5 victory over Durham at Eaglescliffe.

Having thrashed Northumberland at York at the start of the month, the White Rose county picked up where they left off with another convincing victory.

Darryl Berry’s youthful team opened up a 4-2 lead in the morning foursomes.

The partnerships of Paul Lockwood (Hessle) and Jamie Bower (Meltham), Daniel Wasteney and Joseph Dean (both Lindrick), Martin Brown (Pike Hills) and Chris Halley (Malton and Norton), and Willian Whiteoak (Bingley St Ives) and Jamie Harrison (Rotherham) all won their matches.

Then in the afternoon singles, only two Yorkshire players were beaten in the 12 matches.
