Prestigious event for Moor Allerton

golf: Moor Allerton hosts the penultimate event on the EuroPro Tour this week as 108 golfers vie for a top prize of £10,000 at the inaugural Clipper Logistics Championship.

It is the first time the Leeds club has hosted an event on the third rung of the professional ladder.

“It’s good for the club, good for the area and it’s unique for Leeds to have something like this,” said James Whitaker, Moor Allerton’s head professional whose idea it was to stage the event.

“This is a big tournament for us and a big opportunity. Hopefully we can try and get this as a regular thing for the next two or three years and we’ll review where we go after that.”

The event is held over 54 holes with the top 50 players after two rounds tomorrow evening advancing to Friday’s final round.

A handful of local players are all hoping for a good week as they bid to secure a top-five finish on the EuroPro Tour money list and a place on the European Challenge Tour next season. Daniel Gavins (De Vere Oulton Hall) has had a win and a runner-up finish in the last month and is second on the Order of Merit. Marcus Armitage (Howley Hall), James Hepworth (Ilkley), Nick McCarthy (Moortown) and Alex Belt (De Vere Snainton) are also hoping for a good week. Entry is free.
