ROTHERHAM’S Ben Schmidt closed out his season in a manner totally in keeping with his overall form, winning all three of his matches for England Under-16s against Ireland Under-16s at Limerick.

In the mixed event featuring the top boys and girls from each country, Schmidt was the only boy to emerge from the two days with a 100 per cent record.

England won the inaugural competition 15.5-8.5 with Schmidt teaming up with Boys’ Amateur champion Conor Gough (Stoke Park) to win both their foursomes (6&5) and fourball (4&2) matches.

Schmidt, who in August became the youngest holder of the Lee Westwood Trophy, added a one-hole singles victory.

His fantastic season has been rewarded with a place in England Golf’s boys’ squad for next year.

His other 2018 successes have included becoming Yorkshire Boys’ champion, England Golf’s Champion of Champions at boys level, and being a member of both Yorkshire senior and boys teams who achieved national success.
