Cleckheaton’s Olivia Hamilton and Megan Lockett, of Huddersfield, are on 77, the latter eagling not only the 16th but also the 430-yard par-5 second.

Ligthcliffe’s Hannah Holden is on 78, as is Woodsome Hall’s Rochelle Morris, runner-up in both the English women’s amateur and English women’s open stroke play championships this year.

Morris had only two pars on an adventurous back nine which started with a double bogey and included four single bogeys plus successive birdies at holes 15 and 16.

The competition continues today and, after a 36-hole cut, concludes with two further rounds tomorrow.
