Unlucky Dyson suffers further blow in his stop-start season

The 34-year-old world No 43 has withdrawn from this week’s BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth after a scan revealed he had suffered a stress injury to his pelvis and he will be out for ‘a few weeks’.

It is an untimely blow with three major championships coming up over the next three months – beginning with the US Open in four weeks and including the Open in July and the US PGA in August.

Dyson is in the frame to qualify for Jose Maria Olazabal’s European team to play the United States at the Ryder Cup at Medinah, Chicago, at the end of September.

But the enforced lay-off could see him lose ground in the coming weeks as the big summer tournaments offer increased qualification points.

The Malton professional had to withdraw on the first day of the Players Championship in Florida earlier this month and has yet to recover from the injury.

He has been told to rest the hip for a few weeks, meaning as well as this week’s PGA he will also miss next week’s Wales Open at Celtic Manor.

Dyson had already scheduled a break before the US Open at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, from June 14-17, but any hopes he had of taking his place in the field for the year’s second major hang in the balance.

The injury is the latest setback in what has been a stop-start year for Dyson.

Having broken into the world’s top 30 after a stellar summer in 2011, Dyson has been unable to gain any momentum this season.

He took time off after the birth of his first daughter in early March and has also criss-crossed the Atlantic numerous times to fulfil a schedule that includes all the majors and the World Golf Championships.

His best result came in his last tournament when he took 12th place at the Spanish Open earlier this month.

Even if he is fit enough to return at the US Open in four weeks, he will not have played competitively since May 6.

He tweeted yesterday: “(sic) Really gutted to find out I have a stressed pelvis..close to fracturing.. a few weeks off for me now..this season just wont get going..:(“

Coming as it does on the eve of the European Tour’s flagship event – and the only tournament other than the Open to be played in England this year – it is a serious blow for the Yorkshireman.

Dyson finished third at Wentworth last year behind the world’s top two players Luke Donald and Lee Westwood.

He was due to play with Kenny Dalglish in today’s pro-am, but the former Liverpool manager will instead partner former Open champion Ben Curtis.

Four days after the Champions League final, Chelsea’s Roberto Di Matteo is also playing, but Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has withdrawn. He was originally scheduled to be with son Jamie and Ryder Cup hero Paul McGinley.

In Dyson’s absence, the Yorkshire trio of Richard Finch, Danny Willett and Danny Denison are all in action at Wentworth.
