YORKSHIRE duo Nick Poppleton and David Hague and their England team-mates are one match away from claiming gold medals in the European Amateur Men’s Team Championship in Berlin.

The county team-mates played together in the morning foursomes in the 4-3 semi-final defeat of Denmark at Golf Club Bad Saarow and won, as they had in the quarter-final tie with France.

But whereas they defeated their French adversaries 3&1 Wath’s Poppleton, the English stroke play champion, and North of England champion David Hague (Malton & Norton) had to hold their nerve to win at the 19th against the Danes.

It enabled England to win the foursomes 2-0, which proved crucial as they were beaten 3-2 in the singles, in which Poppleton went down 4&3 while Hague was rested.

Today England play Finland, who defeated Sweden 4-3 in their semi-final.
