Yorkshire Boys are champions of England once again

It meant manager Phil Woodcock’s team won all three matches having previously defeated Kent 6-3 and Cornwall 6.5-2.5.

The final score against Lincolnshire reflects neither the efforts of the vanquished team nor the grit and determination of the Yorkshire line-up.

After the champions had taken a 2-1 lead from the morning foursomes the singles proved a tightly-contested affair.

Middlesbrough’s Michael Hay and Rotherham’s Charlie Daughtrey, with a 3&1 win, and Rotherham’s Ben Schmidt and Doncaster’s Josh Berry, who triumphed 2&1, had put those two points on the board by lunchtime.

Heading into the back nine of the singles no fewer than five of the games saw the competitors separated by only one hole, the exception being Abbeydale’s Jack Leversidge who was dominant in posting a 7&6 triumph.

Gradually Woodcock’s side turned the afternoon tide in their favour and there were ultimately further White Rose wins for Hornsea’s Jack Maxey (3&2), Daughtrey (2&1) and Hay (2&1).

Schmidt, the new Lee Westwood Trophy holder, and Berry, the French Under-14 champion and European No 3 in that age group, halved their matches to ensure Yorkshire were unbeaten in the session.

Yorkshire’s victorious squad was completed by Lindrick’s Callum Macfie who, although injured early in the week, still managed to compete and racked up a singles win on day two.

Kent beat Cornwall 7-2 to take second place with Lincolnshire placing third.
