The six-handicapper returned an impressive gross level-par 71, which left the rest of the 118 competitors trailing in his wake.

Ten-handicapper Malcolm Craig got closest, shooting a gross 78 net 68. His was the best net score in Division Two.

He had just the one birdie, at the third, but played the last 10 holes in two over gross.

It meant James Fairhurst, playing off one, had to settle for third place on countback in spite of a gross two-under-par 69.

Fairhurst was one under through 12 holes and closed his round with an eagle-3 at the 485-yard par-5 last.

He gained consolation in carding the best gross score, one better than fellow one-handicapper Brad Tupman, who not only had three birdies in his 70 but also a hole-in-one at the 152-yard par-3 eighth.

Nine-handicapper Darrell Fox had the best gross score in Division Two, carding 77 with the help of birdies at holes six and seven.

Joe Button, also off nine, came second with 78 and will rue the triple-bogey eight he took at the 530-yard par-5 third.

Division Three's best gross score was 89 by David Ramsbottom (16), this despite a triple-bogey seven at the first.

He also returned the best net score (73) in Division Three.
