Yorkshire golf – club news: Ineson no longer envious of wife and son after Fixby Masters success

Envy is now a thing of the past after David, in partnership with Claire, carded a 69 to win the mixed greensomes competition from a field of over 100.

Heavy rain did not prevent some excellent scoring, headed by the Inesons.

In second place following a countback were David Jagger and Heather Benson and in third place, also on countback, were Rex and Linda Beaumont, who edged out men’s captain Nick Ledgard and ladies’ captain Jean Gee.

Huddersfield GC ladies’ section held their second Invitation Day when weather conditions that appeared to be auditioning for autumn meant woolly hats and waterproofs were the order of the day.

As with the Fixby Masters, the weather did not prove a barrier to good scoring.

Huddersfield stalwarts Ruth Horsfall and Brenda Parker played alongside Mary Everard, Hallamshire ladies’ president and a former Curtis Cup player, and Alison Cook, a former Huddersfield player, and came in with a winning score of 81 points.

Celia Mansfield, a member of Woodsome Hall’s scratch team, brought in the second-placed team with 80 points, accompanied by Sandra Paul, Hazel Wooller and J Priestley.

Nearest the pin prize was won by Carolyn Whitwam (Lightcliffe) and nearest the line was Huddersfield’s Joyce Ironside.

Huddersfield member Jackie Elam managed a hole in one at the par-3 fourth hole at the Fixby club - watched closely by her husband Malcolm, who was standing on the adjacent fifth tee in the fourball playing ahead of her.

Elam was playing in the Malcolm Lee Trophy alongside Claire Ineson, Helen Byrne and Maxine Rowlands when she aced the 154-yard hole.

The flag was at the back of the green and she was alerted to the fact that her well-hit three-wood tee shot had found the cup when husband Malcolm and his three playing partners started cheering and clapping.

Over 150 players turned out for the Malcolm Lee Trophy which was won by 18-handicapper John Beaumont with 43 points. The top lady was Martine Lunn, who finished second to Beaumont with 40 points.
