Doncaster GC’s junior organiser Simon Longworth, father of Shane, said: “There was a great turnout for the Junior Cup, and all the players had a good front nine, with six of them playing well under their handicap.

“The back nine proved a little more difficult as the wind picked up.”

Longworth was playing in the final group and was aware that he was probably in contention.

He said: “I knew I was playing well, but took every shot as it came and didn’t try and get ahead of myself.”
