Yorkshire quartet chase China Open pacesetter Han

Chang-won Han shot an eight-under-par 64 to claim the clubhouse lead midway through day one at the China Open, a tournament in which the Yorkshire quartet have all made a promising start.

Harrogate’s John Parry is three off the pace set by Chang-Won Han after a five under par 67, while Richard Finch of Hull and Malton’s Simon Dyson are three under. Sheffield’s Danny Willett is two under after posting an opening round 70.

The South Korean started in blistering fashion, going out in 30 thanks to four successive birdies approaching the turn, and picked up a further two shots on the way back.

Northern Irishman Gareth Maybin also opened impressively with a 65 which included an eagle at the first, his 10th hole of the day.

The 30-year-old from Belfast added birdies at the sixth, seventh, 11th, 13th and 18th to complete a satisfying opening round.

Maybin has been a runner-up on the European Tour three times but is still seeking a first victory.

Afterwards he said: “I putted really nicely today but didn’t actually play that great.

“You can get away with quite a bit out here. I was a little fortunate to say the least.

“I drove it poorly but luckily my wedges and putting were very good so I got away with it a little bit. The short game saved me today.

“Anytime you shoot 65 you’ve got to be happy. I’ll take a lot from that. I need to knuckle down and play well again tomorrow. I’ve been playing pretty poorly so to shoot 65 is pretty good. I’m not thinking about winning, or top 10 or making the cut.”
