Goodison defies sickness to continue his challenge

ROTHERHAM’S Paul Goodison is battling illness at the ISAF World Championship but it did not show yesterday as his medal bid in Australia gathered pace.

Having picked up his first win of the regatta in Fremantle in the Laser on Tuesday, Goodison claimed a second yesterday to maintain his position of second overall after six races.

Goodison began with a sixth amid light and then shifting conditions, even recovering from a capsize, while in the race he won he fell from second to 10th before coming out on top.

All this with a head cold and an upset stomach, which forced him to be sick in between races a few days ago.

“I was pretty ill on Tuesday and struggled through. I had a banging headache and I was sick in between the two races,” said Skandia Team GBR sailor Goodison.

He added: “I still don’t quite feel myself but if I can get through Thursday, on Friday we have a rest day. I think it is a head cold and an upset stomach, nothing too serious.”
