Goodison takes the time to experiment

ROTHERHAM’S Paul Goodison put a new technique to the test as the Laser fleet got underway at the ISAF Sailing World Championships – only to admit it was not the greatest day to do it

The 34-year-old, unlike the rest of his rivals in Australia, knows he will be going to the Olympics next year, having officially been selected in September.

He is, therefore, putting a few things to the test, including his technique, in Fremantle, Australia and opened his campaign with finishes of fifth and eighth.

Sweden’s Jesper Stalheim took the early lead with one win and a fifth with Tom Slingsby, the favourite and Goodison’s chief rival for London 2012 gold, narrowly behind in second overall.

Goodison is well down the fleet in 18th but he believed results were not a true reflection of performances.

“The conditions weren’t quite the ones to test the things we have been practising but it was good to get out racing,” said Skandia Team GBR sailor Goodison.

“I guess I am little disappointed but it wasn’t a disastrous day. The results don’t quite indicate how we sailed.”

Investment specialist Skandia is the principal sponsor of the British sailing team.
