Gosden hits summit but Buick is denied

JOHN Gosden became Royal Ascot’s top trainer for the first time in his distinguished career when Camborne charged from last to first to land the Duke of Edinburgh Handicap.

It was also stable jockey William Buick’s fifth triumph – but he was cruelly denied the riders’ accolade when Ryan Moore, his 2012 championship rival, won the finale.

Gosden and Buick, victorious in the last two St Legers, are now English Flat racing’s most potent combination – three of their wins, including Camborne, were for Princess Haya of Jordan, the wife of Sheikh Mohammed.

Buick said: “John said when I came into the paddock that I was on a favourite and I should ride him like one – with bags of confidence.”

The jockey, speaking at Pontefract yesterday where he rode Swnymor to victory, said he would have settled for five winners when The Nile suffered a fatal fall in Tuesday’s St James’s Palace Stakes, when the Northern Racing College graduate was lucky to escape serious injury.

A treble on Friday saw him head the standings before a ding-dong battle with Moore that went to the wire. “Having Ryan Moore chase you, it’s not very nice. One day, I’ll get him,” added Buick.
