Green Door opens up for trainer Cowell at Beverley

The master of Six Mile Bottom is widely regarded as one of the country’s finest trainers of sprinters, advertising his skills with the likes of Prohibit, Kingsgate Native, Jwala and this season’s King’s Stand hero Goldream in recent years.

Green Door, winner of the Flying Childers at Doncaster two years ago, is a relatively new addition to the yard, switching stables after seemingly losing his way for soon-to-retire Olly Stevens, but it has not taken Cowell long to reignite his career.

Making just his second start for the Newmarket handler and fitted with a visor for the first time, the 9-2 chance dominated from the off in the British Stallion Studs Eddie And Violet Smith EBF Conditions and Stakes, quickening up well inside the final two furlongs to see off his rivals.

While the rest battled it out for minor honours, Green Door was in splendid isolation as he passed the post six lengths to the good in the hands of Danny Tudhope who said: “He’s a gorgeous beast. He bounded out well and was always going to take some pegging back from the front.”

Olympic cycling champion Victoria Pendleton finished well down the field on her second competitive start as an amateur rider.

She badly missed the kick on her mount Royal Etiquette and was already starting to weaken when bumped by Rockwood heading inside the final two furlongs. The race was won by Tina Jackson’s 20-1 shot Jan De Heem, ridden by the experienced John Dawson.

The British Horseracing Authority will today hear the appeal by connections of Simple Verse against the decision to demote the filly from first place in the Ladbrokes St Leger at Doncaster. The Andrea Atzeni-ridden three-year-old passed the post a head in front of the Aidan O’Brien-trained Bondi Beach, but a stewards’ inquiry was immediately called as the pair appeared to bump twice in the closing stages and the placings were reversed.

Rod Millman has booked 5lb claiming apprentice Jordan Vaughan for joint top weight Master Carpenter, the John Smith’s Cup winner, in the Betfred Cambridgeshire at Newmarket on Saturday.
