Griffiths is thrilled as Doncaster face Bristol in last four

Doncaster Knights director of rugby Clive Griffiths has described their British and Irish Cup semi-final draw at home to Bristol as ‘mouthwatering’ and just rewards for the club’s form in the competition this season.

The Castle Park outfit have made a habit this season of upsetting the odds in the cup, never more so than 10 days ago when they produced their strongest performance of the campaign to eliminate much-fancied Munster A.

Whoever they were paired with in the last four would have seen them as underdogs, given Leinster A have won the competition twice and thrashed Rotherham in the quarters, and Worcester and Bristol are head and shoulders above anyone in the Championship.

But when asked about the draw last night, Griffiths quipped: “Easy – I’m just glad we’re not playing them next week after they lost for the first time at the weekend.

“But seriously, a semi-final at home against one of the top two teams in the league – we’d have taken this.

“At this stage of the season we’d probably swap it for a few more league wins but the B&I Cup has been a most welcome addition to our season. It’s a mouthwatering tie and another great one for the crowd who have been fantastic this season.”

Griffiths also praised his side for their commitment in putting up a valiant fight at Worcester on Saturday, before eventually succumbing.

“If anyone questioned the heart and spirit of the team then they just have to look at that game,” he said.
