Gunner blazing and wedding bells ahead

Diary of a point-to-pointer

I was pleased with the performance of Gunner, belonging to my father, Peter, last weekend. Despite the ground being too dry for him, Gunner gave me a lovely feel throughout the race and I managed to keep him reasonably handy, keeping out of trouble. He has one gear and gallops forever, so I can't stick him at the back, it would be similar to racing a Land Rover against a Porsche: no chance on the racetrack but over hill and dale unbeatable.

He did get tired turning for home with two left to jump but it was his first race this season so he is forgiven. I am still amazed by the transformation a season has made, the frog turns into a prince – maybe Peter has been kissing him goodnight when he takes him his evening carrot.

My friend, the "she-wee" tester, took him out hunting last Monday when we visited the York and Ainsty country. There has been a certain degree of curiosity caused by the trial of the she-wee. As predicted she took it fully intent on using it after draining two hip flasks with the help of joint Master Tom Bannister (who never brings his own). Being the kill-joy I am, I flatly refused to allow her to use it. She was on my saddle at the time, so would you? It will just have to wait until next season now.

The day was slightly disappointing as it was warm and scent was scarce.

The crack was jolly but hounds struggled to keep a line if they found one and we ended the day one hound light. Lilac, a young bitch in her first season, could not be found and remains at large. If a black and white harrier has been seen anywhere near Burton Leonard, any information would be appreciated in trying to locate her.

One of our top Yorkshire point-to-point trainers has more than winners to celebrate at the moment. Not only did David Easterby, 33, train three to fill top spot at the Holderness, but he also got engaged recently. His future wife, Stephanie Walters, 31, works as a crime scene investigator.

They met when his flat- mate's laptop was stolen and she was assigned to investigate. Steph has passed the biggest obstacle by winning the approval of parents-in-law, Mick and Alice Easterby, who are delighted. She can be seen helping David regularly at the point to points. Best man will be amateur jockey Tom Greenall, although the date has not yet been set.

One of David's winners at the weekend was part-owned by Phil Davies, a member of my point-to-point syndicate and the local MP. His horse, Piece of Magic, was very impressive, winning for the second time in the Restricted race and is certainly one to watch out for in the future.

I have offered my services to help canvass for Phil in the run up to the next election, they are short of board erectors apparently. So if you notice a few lopsided blue Conservative posters around the Wharfedale area you know who's responsible.

We need a shopping expedition for the Accountant's racing wardrobe. He has lost a stone since we began our training routine and the breeches he excitedly purchased last season look like old- fashioned pantaloons now. I am scanning my favourite website daily for any useful second hand gear, www.jumpingforfun.co.uk.

Set up by point to point owner Dom Bradshaw, I always buy and sell racing gear on it. Every Sunday evening Peter has a routine of logging on to the discussion forum, checking out the gossip from all the weekend's fixtures.
