Happy Times here again for Phillips

THE British-based Australian Sam Griffiths was on flying form to win the main event of the weekend at Chatsworth International Horse Trials.

Riding Happy Times, he secured his first victory in the HSBC World Cup Eventing series.

Griffiths and Happy Times were third at Badminton and Burghley last year and won the CIC three-star event at Belton last month.

He is now aiming to join the Australian squad for the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in September.

"The cross-country rode really well but it was tough and I was pleased to be on such an experienced horse," said Griffiths.

"It was the sort of big course you'd expect someone like Ian Stark to produce in that it favoured bold riding."

Second place went to Britain's Lucy Wiegersma with Woodfalls Inigo Jones.

She was pleased with their performance and said she was glad to have got rid of her "Badminton demons" – she had had an early run-out there.

Fiona Hobby was third riding Roma ML and fourth place went to Neil Spratt with Upleadon, last year's Bramham CIC three-star winner.

A near capacity crowd enjoyed watching the final event in good weather, much to the relief of the organisers. The second day of last year's event had to be cancelled due to rain.

All did not go so well for York rider Jolyse Clancey, however. She had a crashing fall in the show-jumping ring when her saddle slipped.

She was taking the penultimate fence in the advanced class on her seven-year-old mare On a Star when the saddle went right underneath the horse.

When her mother Alyse tried to catch the horse as it was heading for the exit, it knocked her flying and then ran out of the ring and through the crowd.

Mother and daughter were taken to the Royal Chesterfield hospital for check-ups. Jolyse is badly bruised but relieved no bones were broken and Alyse has facial bruising.

"Everyone was very lucky and the horse is fine but it was a shock at the time," said Alyse. The saddle slipped because the horse was not wearing a breast plate and that is a lesson learned, says Alyse.

Jolyse is hoping to be fit enough to ride at Houghton next week and at Bramham at the beginning of June.

Junior show-jumper Laura Robinson, 15, from Northallerton has won this year's EquestrianClearance.com scholarship.

Laura has been doing well in pony show-jumping and was a member of Great Britain's gold medal-winning team at the Children on Horses European Championships in Belgium last year.

She also won the leading junior show-jumper of the year title at the Horse of the Year Show riding Paddy Power.

Laura is keen to make show-jumping her career and is hoping to be selected for both the Pony European team and the under-18 squad.

Laura will receive 2,000 to spend on-line as well as team clothing, saddle cloths and rugs.

Racehorse trainer Philip Kirby is holding an open day at his Dibble Bridge stables at Castleton near Whitby on Saturday.

There will be a parade of horses and visitors will be able to watch them being schooled over jumps as well as meeting some leading jockeys, including James Reveley.
