Hargreaves listed by Reds but Woodgate remains in the shadows

England duo Owen Hargreaves and Jonathan Woodgate were handed contrasting news as clubs last night provided the Premier League with their 25-man squad lists for the first half of the season.

Manchester United midfielder Hargreaves has made a solitary substitute appearance in the last two years during his battle with tendinitis and there had been serious doubts over his inclusion.

However, United confirmed yesterday that all of their senior players, apart from those out on loan, have been registered to play.

Former Leeds United defender Woodgate, meanwhile, was less fortunate at White Hart Lane.

Manager Harry Redknapp decided to omit the injury-plagued centre-back, who he recently revealed was fighting to save his career due to a groin problem. Woodgate made only three appearances last season and has not played at all since November.

Specialist surgery in both America and Australia proved unsuccessful and Redknapp believes the player is in danger of having to retire.

Also omitted from the Spurs squad submitted to the Premier League yesterday was goalkeeper Ben Alnwick, with new loan signing Stipe Pletikosa now providing back-up to Heurelho Gomes and Carlo Cudicini.

Former Sheffield United player Kyle Naughton was included in Spurs' list but fellow ex-Blade Kyle Walker was absent as was former Leeds United trainee Danny Rose.

Stoke City left out striker Mamady Sidibe, who is out for the season with a snapped Achilles tendon.

All 20 Premier League clubs had to submit a squad of up to 25 players by 5pm yesterday, containing no more than 17 players who do not qualify as home-grown.

A home-grown player is one who "irrespective of his nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to the Football Association or the Football Association of Wales for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons or 36 months prior to his 21st birthday".

Under-21 players (born on or after January 1 1989) do not have to count towards the 25-man squads. Changes to the squads can be made in January.

PREMIER LEAGUE'S NEW 25-MAN SQUAD SYSTEM

Premier League clubs must register a squad of up to 25 players aged 21 or over.

Eight of the 25-man squad must be home-grown – players who have spent minimum three years registered with an English club before the age of 21.

Clubs can supplement squad with an unlimited number of players under 21.

Changes to squad can only be made during transfer window, though changes may be allowed in exceptional circumstances.

Players loaned to clubs in Football League cannot be replaced, but those players can regain place in the squad upon return to parent club.

Rules only apply to Premier League matches and not domestic Cup or European competitions.

For the 2010-11 campaign Under-21 players will have been born on or after 1st January 1989
