Haskell hails England's spirit

ENGLAND returned to their training headquarters last night ahead of their trip to Rome with James Haskell claiming team unity was the deciding factor in their victory over Wales in the Six Nations opener last Saturday.

Stade Francais back row Haskell scored his first two tries in an England jersey in a performance that helped celebrate 100 years of rugby at Twickenham and provide a bright start to the second century.

Team manager Martin Johnson's previous 18 months have been endured rather than enjoyed, but Saturday's victory put a smile back on the face of English rugby. The fact that all England's players and coaching staff emerged from the changing rooms acknowledging there remains plenty of room for improvement bodes well for Sunday's game against Italy.

"The atmosphere we have created here is about working for each other," said Haskell whose second try on Saturday, following Delon Armitage's interception, sealed the win for England.

"As a team we have spoken about how we are going to get better, and sometimes results haven't gone our way.

"But we have always stuck together and at times – like on Saturday – we have shown what we can do. We were faced with a three-point lead and a roaring Welsh side, but because of our determination there was never a chance that we were going to lose that.

"We stuck together and worked together and got the result we wanted. But we don't want to get carried away because everything now is about building towards Italy on Sunday."

England hope Riki Flutey will be available after he missed the opener with a dead leg. Toby Flood will make way in what could be the only change to Johnson's team.
