Hewitt can't wait to get his skates on

SHEFFIELD STEELERS forward Jason Hewitt is keen to get back out on the ice to prove last season was nothing more than a blip for the team.

The 27-year-old enjoyed the best points return of his career last season, posting 11 goals in a total of 23 points.

But the team – who clinched the league and play-off double in 2008-09 – limped to a fifth-place finish and crashed out of the post-season play-offs at the first hurdle.

Hewitt, now a regular with the Great Britain side, said: "It was a tough year and horrible to be a part of with fifth place and then not even making the play-off finals weekend.

"There is something to prove for us as a group of players and hopefully the new guys coming in understand that as well.

New player-coach Ben Simon is still waiting for a handful of his players to arrive in the UK ahead of Saturday's opening Elite League clash with Cardiff Devils at Sheffield Arena (7pm).

He finalised his roster with the weekend capture of former Florida Panthers forward Rob Globke, who could be struggling to be available for the opening night.

Hewitt is hoping he can take his game to a higher level under Simon, adding: "Last year I had a bigger role on the team and my all-round game was stronger because I was in better shape.

"Hopefully, Ben Simon will see that in me as well."
