Hodson takes star billing with try hat-trick in Otley triumph

Two tries from Sam Wilson were not enough to prevent Hull Ionians slipping to a heavy defeat away to Blaydon in National One on Saturday.

Ionians were already 41-0 down when Wilson scored a quick double with Greg Lound converting both. But the points could not give Hull the boost they needed and they lost 66-14.

Otley consolidated their position in National Two North when they handed Luctonians, the team immediately above them, a 42-22 beating at Cross Green.

Tom Hodson was in irresistible form for Otley as he scored three tries and kicked six conversions in their victory.

Scrum-half Max Johnson and Simon Willet also got their names on the scoresheet with their other points coming from a penalty try.

Sheffield Tigers slipped a place when they lost 32-21 at Preston Grasshoppers on Saturday.

A well-worked try from Henry Packard for Tigers in the first half and a penalty try just before the final whistle proved not to be enough.

Struggling Wharfedale were edged out 18-13 in their home match against second-placed Sale, with Tom Barrett scoring their only try and kicking the conversion and two penalties.

Front-row Tom Larder scored Harrogate’s only try of the match as they went down 14-7 at Sedgley Park to remain bottom alongside Wharfedale.

Huddersfield took their winning run in National Three North into double figures when they ran in 13 tries in an 87-0 romp at bottom-placed Stockport.

There were some great tries as Sandal took a 36-18 win over Kendal.

Prop Alex Edler scored two tries from catch-and-drives and full-back Tom Coad also weighed in with a brace, one of them being a spectacular effort.

Hull ran out 24-15 winners at Yorkshire rivals Cleckheaton, while Morley were narrowly beaten 30-25 by in-form Firwood Waterloo.

Two length-of-the-pitch tries by full-back Ben Magee helped Ilkley to a 29-22 win at Doncaster Phoenix. Alex Keeton, Doncaster’s hooker, also touched down twice.

A long-range penalty kick by Jonty Peters with 10 minutes remaining saw Pocklington edge a 20-17 win at Morpeth to maintain their position as the leading Yorkshire side in North One East.

Full-back Jack Fletcher and No 8 Jack Holbrough scored Pocklington’s tries, to three by the home side.

Bradford & Bingley came from 10-7 in arrears to score a 17-10 win at Dinnington, fly-half Gerhard Nortier scoring both their tries as well as landing a drop goal.

Driffield moved ahead of Morpeth with a 41-21 win at bottom placed Wheatley Hills, scoring four of their five tries in the first 20 minutes before Wheatley fought back.

Malton & Norton maintained their position in the league thanks to two bonus points despite being beaten 38-31 at second-placed Penrith.

Yorkshire One leaders Bridlington ran in seven tries to one in a 49-6 home victory over Bradford Salem.

Erstwhile second-placed side Old Brodleians won 14-3 at Heath, but the match may have to be replayed after it was abandoned inside 60 minutes following an injury to the referee.

Also abandoned, because of a player injury, was Scarborough’s home match against North Ribblesdale. The hosts were leading by two converted tries when the game ended.

Although Keighley won 17-13 at Selby, they were overtaken by West Leeds, who moved into second place when they scored six tries in a 45-18 home win over tailenders Acklam.

Winger Jack Marshall scored two of West Leeds’s tries and Kier Brakwell hit six conversions and a penalty.

York moved ahead of their rivals when they won 48-27 at home to Beverley.

Runaway Yorkshire Two leaders Moortown were held to a 17-14 winning margin at Ripon.
