Holbrough’s try double is decisive

Yorkshire One: Pocklington maintained their good start to the season with the game’s three tries for a 17-9 win at Keighley.

Keighley, with the wind in the first half, turned round 6-5 ahead with two penalties by full-back Danny McGhee to the first of flanker Jack Holbrough’s two tries for Pocklington.

Winger Charlie Allen was the visitors’ other try scorer, with Nick Bennett converting one.

Castleford also made it two wins from two matches when they came from behind to emerge 39-32 ahead at Scarborough as the sides shared 10 tries in an action-packed game.

Scarborough had been 12-6 ahead but Castleford stormed into a 39-12 lead, helped by a hat-trick of tries from centre Craig Jeffels.

Scarborough fought their way back well as the visitors were reduced to 13 men at one point, and, although denied a win, the hosts salvaged a second bonus point when stand-off Tom Harrison’s late penalty brought the deficit down to seven points.

Prop Steve Johnson and winger Paul Philpot were Castleford’s other try scorers. Right winger Tom Ratcliffe scored twice for Scarborough, whose other tries were from centre Rob James, full-back Graham Jeffrey and prop Nino Cutino.

Driffield also scored five tries in their 35-16 win at North Ribblesdale.

Scrum-half Chris Gray, winger Danny Smith, centres Will Ollett and Tom Wright and full-back Lee Birch were Driffield’s try scorers, with Birch converting all five.

Centres Simon Bolland and Dan Watson scored for Ribblesdale, with Steve Moon adding a brace of penalties.

Dinnington were again left to salvage a losing bonus point when they were edged out 14-13 at home to Heath, who had turned round 7-6 ahead.

Yorkshire Two: Selby went top with a bonus-winning 32-10 victory at Hullensians.

Selby took the lead with a ninth-minute penalty from stand-off Jordan Barton, but Hullensians equalised a minute later with a penalty from stand-off Jamie Gill and turned round 10-3 ahead after Gill had converted a try by prop Chris O’Leary.

With the wind on their backs, Selby took control with tries from wingers Alex Arthur and Ben Lunt, replacement centre Christian Townend and hooker Duncan Hardy. Barton added his second penalty and Iain Adamson converted three of the tries.

In a tight game, Yarnbury scraped a 23-22 victory in their derby at West Park Leeds.

Yarnbury had gone ahead with tries by centre Ben Horner and second- row Ian Maycock, both converted by Steven Riley, who also landed a penalty. Phil Davies kicked a hat-trick of penalties for West Park and they narrowed the gap to 17-14 at half-time with a try by winger Sam Booth late in the opening half.

Home full-back Nick Nightingale scored the only try of the second half as Yarnbury were restricted to two penalties by Riley.

Barnsley went into second place when they scored six tries in a 39-18 win at West Leeds.

Joe South scored two tries for Barnsley, while Gregory Colbridge kicked three conversions and a penalty.

Although the home side scored two tries to one, Doncaster Phoenix emerged 16-13 winners at Skipton with Kerey Thomas scoring a try for the Phoenix and Ben Miller kicking three penalties and a conversion.

Leodiensians, after their 54-0 hammering of Skipton, met their match when they lost 13-10 on their visit to last season’s Yorkshire Three winners Wath on Dearne.

Winger Ben Keen kicked two penalties and converted fly-half Martin Bray’s try.

Yorkshire Three: Bramley Phoenix scored their first win of the campaign, and grabbed a four-try bonus when they gained a 29-14 home victory in a hard-fought match against Sheffield Medicals, last season’s Yorkshire Four winners.

The score was level at 24-24 when Bramley clinched the match with a late try by winger Matt Casher.

Matthew Clark, the Medics’ No 8, scored their opening try but was then knocked out and later taken to hospital for a check-up. Second-row Alex Fawdry scored the visitors’ other two tries, with Eddie Farmer converting all three and adding a lone penalty in the second half.

Centre Michael Benn, scrum-half Aaron McHale and second-row Adam Oliver had scored Bramley’s earlier tries, with Sam Coates converting all three and adding a penalty.

In a match switched to Halifax, Old Rishworthians held on under some pressure in the second half to score a 15-10 home win over Rotherham Phoenix.

Rishworthians scored their points before the break with tries from Nick Faulkner and Anthony Shoesmith, with a conversion and penalty by Michael Piper.
