KEVIN Ryan could have a potential 2019 Classic contender after Frankie Dettori grabbed the spare ride on Emaraaty Ana with both hands to win the Gimcrack Stakes on day three of York’s Ebor festival.
The inspired Dettori, replacing the ill Jamie Spencer, dictated affairs in the Group Two for juveniles to complete a big-race double after steering Stradivarius home in the Lonsdale Cup to secure a £1m bonus.
He had Emaraaty Ana out of the stalls smartly and led all the way over six furlongs to give Hambleton-based Ryan a fourth Gimcrack triumph following the wins of Amadeus Wolf, Blaine and Astaire.
Legends Of War made late gains on the leader, but was still half a length down on Emaraaty Ana at the line. Shine So Bright was three-quarters of a length back in third.
“It’s great to win it again, that’s four times now,” said an elated Ryan.
“He’s always been very good, he won first time but then I was a little disappointed at Newbury when the ground was a bit loose.
“He’s still immature, but will definitely get further. Frankie just said not to over-race him this year, as he’ll make a lovely three-year-old.
“I thought his immaturity might find him out close home, but he dug deep.
“You don’t tell Frankie how to ride a horse, but I did say to him don’t be afraid to make it.”
Earlier Titus was an emphatic winner of the Sky Bet Handicap for Malton trainer Declan Carroll.
The four-year-old travelled into contention with remarkable ease in the confident hands of Ger O’Neill, with the 5lb claimer sat motionless while his rival jockeys rowed along halfway up the home straight.
He had four lengths in hand at the winning line after producing one of the most eyecatching performances of the week.
Carroll said: “He’s had some good runs in some very good races. He was going up in trip today and has done it very well. We knew he’d improve for going up in trip. Ger rode him very well. He’s a good kid.”
Considering future targets, the trainer added: “There’s a handicap at Leopardstown I was looking at. The £1m Ebor next year sounds very good!”
