Huddersfield denied by impressive Sale

Huddersfield slipped to their first defeat of the season despite a spirited second-half fightback at home to Sale.

The visitors led 17-3 at half-time, with Tom Hodson stopping the rot with a 35th-minute penalty.

A second successful kick from the fly-half made it 17-6 early in the second half before winger Jack Moon scored out wide to narrow the gap to eight points.

Sale landed a penalty but, from the last play of the game, lock Gavin Rhodes burst through to grab his side a bonus point, Hodson adding the conversion to make the final score 20-18.

Injury-hit Sandal went down 36-29 at Westoe.

After trailing 12-0 they hit back with converted tries to lead courtesy of winger Gareth Newman.

The hosts struck back to lead 36-22 before full-back James Ellar added a fourth try in the latter stages and fly-half Greg Wood converted.

Morley could only muster a try in the last 10 minutes and three penalties at Burnage as they lost 21-14 for a third successive defeat.

Flanker Tom Moody’s try was the highlight for the Maroons but Burnage made good use of their meagre possession.

Rossendale snatched a 32-35 victory with the last action of the match at Beverley.

Beverley led 18-6 at half-time through tries by Stuart Nel and James Holland, as well as two penalties and a conversion by Lee Birch to two Rossendale penalties from full-back Steve Nutt.

Converted tries by James Albinson and Anthony Bingham and a Nutt penalty took Rossendale into the lead, only for Beverley to surge ahead again with converted tries by Holland and Birch.

In the dying moments, Leighton Taylor powered over for a converted try before Bingham secured the win with a later strike.

Bradford & Bingley were held to a 29-29 draw at home by bottom club Penrith.

Brett Mitchell, Chris Fisher, Adam Malthouse scored tries for the home side with Tom Bills converting all three.

But it still required a late try from Suka Hufanga in the 76th minute to spare the Bees’ blushes, with Bills unable to convert.
