Huddersfield Town owe it to the fans to replicate Manchester United standard

Town pull down the curtain on a thoroughly forgettable 2018-19 campaign on the south coast and, despite playing for little other than pride as they end their two-season stint in the Premier League, midfielder Juninho Bacuna says he and his team-mates owe it to everyone connected with the club to put in a spirited performance.

Endeavour and heart was certainly not in short supply in Town’s 1-1 weekend draw with Manchester United, with their last home game in the top flight providing a pleasant surprise for the home faithful who turned out to salute outgoing chairman Dean Hoyle.

A repeat at St Mary’s on an occasion when several Town players are likely to line up for the club for the last time now represents the pressing obligation, according to Bacuna.

The Dutch midfielder, who impressed in Sunday’s game as Town ended the Champions League hopes of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, said: “The supporters have been to all the games and they have been dedicated.

“We had a good mindset (on Sunday) and hopefully we have that next week and could have a good result there.

“We told each other that we wanted to give the club and the fans a good game (on Sunday), so that they could enjoy it at our last home game. I think we did it quite well.

“I think the chairman enjoyed the game and we were much better than United and were stronger and stayed together as a team.

“It is always good to play against big clubs and we got a good result on Sunday and it was good for the team in our last home game in the Premier League. It is a good feeling.”

Meanwhile, Bacuna insists that all his current focus is on fulfilling his season’s commitments with Huddersfield, with no thoughts diverting towards his own future at the club.

The Netherlands under-21 international, who joined Town for an undisclosed fee on a initial three-year deal from Eredivisie outfit Groningen last summer, said: “I have still have one game with Huddersfield and I do not think about the future.

“We gave the club and supporters a good feeling (on Sunday) and now we have to keep going with this.”
