‘Human bike’ brings cycling to Yorkshire school ahead of Tour de France

Youngsters joined staff at Westville House School, in Ilkley, by dressing in various colours and lying on the school’s sports field to form the outline of a bicycle.

School governor Colin Marshall photographed the human sculpture from a 12-metre-high platform before filming the group in motion.

Helen James, head of marketing at the independent school, said: “We wanted to do something that was really different that the children would remember.

“We wanted to make sure we marked the Tour as a school before we broke up for summer.

“The kids will never forget taking part – it was quite an afternoon.”

It comes after all pupils in the school took part in Bikeability training before forming ‘La Grande Bicyclette’.

Westville House caters to youngsters aged two-and-a-half to 11.

The Tour de France will roll from Leeds to Harrogate via Ilkley for stage one of the Grand Depart on Saturday July 5, before the world’s leading cyclists make their way from York to Sheffield the following day.
