Domestic rivalries forgotten as players unite for common GB cause at World Championships

Cardiff added the post-season silverware to their regular season league title for the second double in as many years – last season combining the league with the Challenge Cup.

They were only denied a treble last year due to Steelers beating them in the play-off final in Nottingham – a result the Devils were able to reverse last Sunday with a 3-1 triumph.

But, as is customary at this time of year, Myers is facing off alongside his domestic rivals from South Yorkshire as the GB squad prepares for the World Championships in Hungary.

Myers, along with the Devils Rotherham-born netminder Ben Bowns and Cardiff back-up goalie Thomas Murdy, form part of a 28-man squad under head coach Pete Russell. They are joined by Steelers’ Jonathan Phillips, Robert Dowd, Ben O’Connor, Davey Phillips and Liam Kirk for this weekend’s two warm-up games against Lithuania.

Russell will then reduce his roster to 23 players who – after winning promotion last year – will compete in Budapest in the Division 1A tournament against the host nation as well as Italy, Kazakhstan, Poland and Slovenia.

“The domestic season is done and dusted – that’s all in the past,” said Myers. “The British boys all have a great rivalry in the season, but once we meet for GB that is all forgotten about and we are one unit.

“The anticipation is even higher this year with everyone wanting to be on the plane to Budapest. Next week’s tournament will be a real test and everyone wants to be a part of it.”
