Ilkley's Allen charges to victory in Sheffield

ILKLEY cyclo-cross rider Richard Allen secured victory in the Sheffield Stars event at Graves Tennis and Leisure Centre in Sheffield yesterday, crossing the line 37 seconds ahead of his nearest rival.

Veteran rider Allen, riding for a team named 'Here Come The Belgians', covered eight laps of a challenging course in 49mins 17secs to win from Midlands rival James Furniss, of the Zepnat Racing Team.

Allen found himself seventh after the opening lap as his rivals forged ahead, but he was never too far behind, and by the end of the second lap he had hit the front alongside Bradford RCC rider Philip Hinchliffe.
