Impressive Graves well ahead of field

cycling: York’s Philip Graves secured a convincing victory in the Doncaster Wheelers 10-mile time trial in South Yorkshire on Saturday, winning by more than a minute from his nearest rival.

The 21-year-old Clifton Cycling Club member covered the course at Hatfield Woodhouse in 20min 27sec to win by 1min 5sec over Team Swift rival Steve Gore-Broen.

Also setting an impressive time over 10 miles was I Ride Racing Team’s Julian Ramsbottom from Scunthorpe, who won the Retford and District Wheelers’ event at Sutton on Trent in Nottinghamshire. Ramsbottom clocked 20min 41sec, but only won by four seconds from Lutterworth rival Matt Sinclair.

In the veterans’ event, Scunthorpe Poly CC’s Anthony Nash was just 30 seconds behind Ian Cammish, the 53-year-old Planet X rider who has won several national titles in his career.

Team Swift duo Joel Wainman and Andy Jackson proved victorious in the Hull Thursday Road Club George Ely Memorial 24-mile event at Driffield.

They covered the distance in 51min 7sec to win by 22 seconds from Jason Young of City RC Hull and Steve Guymer of Active Cycles.

Rotherham’s Dean Downing took third spot in the opening stage of the Tour of Taiwan yesterday.

The Rapha Condor-Sharp team leader was just inches behind stage winner Park Sung Baek of Korea at the end of the 65-km race. Downing was also third in the two-km prologue on Saturday.

Morley’s Lee Tunnicliffe (Planet X) took victory in the Yorkshire Road Club hilly 10-mile event at Addingham near Bradford yesterday, clocking 24min 33sec to win by 15 seconds from Ellis Briggs Racing Team rival Stephen Henson.
