Ionians are kept waiting for title as Hull live to fight another day

Despite taking the lead in the 10th minute with a penalty from fly-half Hinchliffe, Huddersfield posed no real threat for the remainder of the game.

Hull fly-half James Ferguson scored a try in the 47th minute and converted four of their tries, with winger Sam Wilson bagging a brace for the hosts. Hull’s other winger, Keane Naylor, rounded off the scoring with a try in the 80th minute.

Ionians can still be caught at the top and need a victory in their final game at Caldy to confirm the league title.

Hull live to fight another day after earning a late win at Birmingham Solihull.

Romanian international Steve Hihetah beat five players to score a try with just two minutes remaining and Greg Lound added the conversion from out wide to seal a 40-38 victory.

Had Hull lost, they would have been relegated but the win means that they face Preston Grasshoppers in the last game of the season with it all to play for.

It was the visitors who got off to the better start with Lound kicking a penalty inside the first minute.

Birmingham battled back and led 21-18 at the break although Adam Corkish scored a brace and Johnny Matthews also bagged a try to keep Hull in it. Matthews and Cook crashed over in the second half but Hull still trailed until the 78th minute when Hihetah scored his try.

Frailty in defence and poor finishing condemned Otley to picking up just two bonus points in a 39-33 defeat at Sedgley Park.

The Lancastrians shaded the first half to lead 19-12, Otley tries coming from centre Jack Mackie and No 8 Freddie Watson.

The game opened up after the break but Otley were kept at bay despite tries from flanker Jack Scott-Paul, winger Harry Hudson and captain Stephen Depledge, who added three more conversions.

Harrogate scored four tries but claimed just two bonus points as Luctonians eased their relegation worries with a bonus-point 30-27 away win.

Callum Irvine’s penalty kicked Harrogate ahead but scrum-half Sam Boxhall drove over for the visitors before Kerry Wood’s try restored the home lead.

Winger Frank Kelly squeezed over in the corner to give the visitors a 13-8 half-time lead.

Jimmy Norris’s converted try pushed Luctonians further clear but Sam Brady replied with a brace for the hosts.

Langdon’s penalty and Norris’s try made it 30-22 but Sam Bottomley crashed over for Harrogate, who were then denied by staunch defence from the visitors.
