Ionians impress to help boost their standing

Hull Ionians completed a league double with a 28-11 home win over Birmingham & Solihull to consolidate their second place in National Two North.

Ionians collected a four-try bonus but had an early setback when stand-off Lee Chapman landed a sixth-minute drop goal for the visitors.

Birmingham got back to within two points when Dan Barrett touched down, but this was matched by Ionians’ No 8 Dan Hague on the stroke of half time.

The visitors again opened the second-half scoring with a penalty from Jack Jolly, but Ionians put the game out of reach with Sharp’s second try and another from centre Richard Fletcher.

City rivals Hull had less luck at Caldy, losing out 42-21.

The Cheshire side were 25-0 ahead before Hull got on the scoreboard in the second half with winger Alex Piercy and centre Steve Slingsby both touching down and stand-off Greg Lound adding the conversions.

Caldy extended their lead to 42-14 with two more tries. Hull had the last word with scrum-half Dan White touching down on 80 minutes and James Cameron converting.
