Irvine’s late clincher earns reward for Harrogate’s tireless front-row

Their efforts were enough to set up a 28-23 victory at Broadstreet, which was sealed by Callum Irvine’s try from the last move of the match.

James Morland and Noel Minikin scored tries as Harrogate went 14-3 ahead but Broadstreet led 17-14 at the break.

They scored again after the interval but Harrogate took control and Sam Bottomley’s strength and pace took him over to score a converted try before Irvine squeezed in at the corner.

Huddersfield claimed a bonus point in a 31-22 defeat at Caldy.

They went behind before captain Nick Sharp and winger Michael Clarke made it 10-5.

Caldy came back to lead 12-10 at half-time and extended their advantage to 17-10 with a try from Andrew Soultair 10 minutes into the second half. Full-back Joel Hinchliffe carved through the centre for his try on 54 minutes, reducing the arrears to 17-15, only for Caldy to score next.

When Sharp stretched over with five minutes remaining and Hinchliffe converted there was renewed hope but from the restart Caldy scored their fifth try.

Otley scored six tries without converting any and defeated Luctonians 30-19 at home.

They scored two tries in the first five minutes through captain Adam Blades and winger Harry Hudson. Luctonians replied with a try by full-back Joseph Doyle converted by William Sparrow.

Otley responded with tries from Stephen Costello and Kristian Sharples and after Luctonians had come back to within a point, they settled the issue with a penalty try and another from Nazir Karim.

Hull Ionians lost their top-of-the-table showdown 25-15 against Ampthill at Dillingham Park.

Ampthill raced into a 15-0 lead before scrum-half Isaac Green kicked a penalty before the break.

Another penalty saw Ampthill extend their lead, but Ionians struck through centre Ben Winterburn’s 67th-minute try.

They were down to 14 men for the remainder of the match, and the hosts scored a converted try before Ionians winger Jonathan Steel replied.

Hull lost 27-18 at home against Stourbridge.

Stand-off James Cameron struck two penalties but Stourbridge were 20-6 ahead after 53 minutes.

A catch and drive from prop Michael Jobling, and a 75th-minute try from hooker Tommy Matthews, converted by Cameron, brought Hull back to within two points.

They pressured but gave the ball away for Stourbridge winger Will Brassington to score, the conversion leaving Hull without even a losing bonus point.
