James to be England's No 1 in South Africa

DAVID JAMES has been handed the No 1 shirt for the forthcoming World Cup, as Fabio Capello gave his broadest hint yet that the Portsmouth goalkeeper will be his first-choice goalkeeper in South Africa.

West Ham's Robert Green and Manchester City's Joe Hart are the other two goalkeepers in the 23-man squad.

Peter Crouch has been given the No 9 shirt ahead of Emile Heskey and former Leeds United player Aaron Lennon will wear the No 7 shirt, hinting that the Spurs man will be Capello's first-choice right winger.

Joe Cole will wear the No 11 shirt despite his injury-ravaged last two years, while Gareth Barry - who only passed a fitness test this week and is unlikely to figure in the opening game on June 12 against the USA - has been handed the No 14.
